Ocotal Beach is still very much a locals getaway. There is one resort, a few small apartment buildings, a restaurant that is delicious, more on that later , a quiet beach, and stunning views. Since the walk was one road for 3 kilometers, Nino and I opted for a long leisurely walk. Until Ocotal Beach, I had never seen a black sand beach before.
Frankly, I barely knew that they existed having grown up in places such as Southwest Florida where all the rage was white sand beaches that stretched for miles. Black sand beaches are created by the weathering of volcanic material, glass, and cooled lava deposits. Dating back 65 million years, Costa Rica has been home to approximately volcanoes , with five still considered active. Ocotal Beach stands out among all the predominantly white sand beaches surrounding it.
There are a few characters I found enthralling about black sand beaches. As you walk up to the beach, the fine sand glitters from the deposit mixture shimmer and shine in the sun.
Looking at the sand reminded me of a mirage in movies. Usually black ground in the hot sun means hot feet, but the sand was surprisingly cool. Anything sitting in the sun will get hot, so make sure you test the sand before kicking off those flip flops. Lastly, the black sand is remarkably soft. Soft and volcanoes are not two words I thought belonged in the same sentence, but I was proven wrong on Ocotal beach.
